Society of Legal Scholars,
113th Annual Conference

6th – 9th September 2022,
King’s College London

King’s College London

This is London calling.

In September 2022 we look forward to welcoming delegates to King’s College London for the 113th annual conference of the Society of Legal Scholars. This year’s conference theme is ‘The links and connections to legal development’. The conference explores how links and connections both within one legal system and across different legal systems work to influence the development of law. Legal rules, ideas and concepts develop as a result of diverse influences, both internal and external to any legal system. The importance of links and connections in legal development can be demonstrated in many different ways, including the examination of particular links between people, within institutional and political networks or with bodies in other legal systems. As John Donne observed, ‘[n]o man is an island, entire of itself’.

In a return to our usual practice, the 2022 conference will be held in person. In recognition of the difficulties that might be present for some members because of Covid-19, a new online attendance option will allow delegates the opportunity to attend and to present papers virtually in the sessions held on the 7th and 8th of September. These two days will cover the second day of Subject Session A and the first day of Subject Session B. It is also anticipated that virtual delegates to either of these days will also be able to access a live streaming of each of the three plenary sessions.

The conference venue is the iconic Bush House, located in the heart of legal London between Aldwych and the Strand. Now a part of King’s College London’s Strand campus, Bush House has a history of links to the wider world as the former home of the BBC World Service. A full social programme with events at unique venues is presented, including a welcome drinks and supper atop Bush House with panoramic views of London, a reception at the House of Commons Members’ Dining Room and a conference dinner in the Great Hall of Lincoln’s Inn.

The conference consists of a full range of 28 separate subject sections with 14 subject sections in each half. Each subject section will have four 90-minute sessions. The successful mentorship programme for early career researchers, first begun in 2020, will continue at our 2022 conference. We also welcome back our publisher exhibitors. There will be manifold opportunities for delegates to speak with publishers and with each other. The 113th annual conference allows delegates to both renew old links and connections and also to make new ones.

Answer London’s call! I look forward to seeing you in September.
